AS 1684 Standards Guide

AS 1684: Residential Timber-Framed Construction is the mandatory bible for carpenters and builders in Australia. It dictates the design criteria, building practices, tie-downs, bracing, and span tables required to ensure structural integrity in timber framing.

Structure of the Standard

• Part 1: Design Criteria. Outlines the general design methods for determining member sizes, bracing, and tie-down requirements.
• Part 2: Non-Cyclonic Areas (N1-N4). The most commonly used section in regions like Sydney. It provides span tables and construction details for areas not subject to extreme cyclonic winds.
• Part 3: Cyclonic Areas (C1-C3). Used for Northern Australia and coastal regions prone to severe weather.
• Part 4: Simplified - Non-Cyclonic (N1-N2). A condensed version of Part 2, designed for simple, geometric residential structures.

Understanding Span Tables

• Dead Loads: The permanent weight of the structure (roof tiles, plasterboard, framing).
• Live Loads: Temporary loads (people walking on a deck, wind forces).
• Roof Pitch & Spacing: How steep the roof is and how far apart the trusses or rafters are spaced (commonly 450mm or 600mm).

Carpentry Qualifications (NSW)

Becoming a fully qualified and licensed carpenter in New South Wales involves combining formal education with practical on-site experience.

Step 1: The Apprenticeship

• Duration: Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time work under a licensed tradesperson or builder.
• TAFE / RTO Training: You will attend a Registered Training Organisation for "block release" or "day release".
• Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220): The nationally recognized qualification covering levelling, framing, and lock-up stages.

Step 2: Mandatory Requirements

Before stepping on site, you must hold a White Card (General Construction Induction) for hazard identification and site safety.

Step 3: Getting Licensed via Fair Trading NSW

• In NSW, you must hold a Contractor Licence to carry out residential building work valued at over $5,000 (including GST).
• Requires submitting your Certificate III transcript, White Card, proof of apprenticeship, and a National Police Check.

Carpenter to Builder Pathway

Carpentry is widely considered the best foundational trade for becoming a licensed builder. Transitioning requires meeting strict criteria set by Fair Trading NSW.

1. Additional Qualifications

• CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building): Teaches site management, reading complex plans, estimating, and legal obligations.
• CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building): A higher-level qualification required for medium-rise structures.

2. Required Experience

• At least two years (24 months) of relevant industry experience gained after qualifying as a tradesperson.
• Must be broad in scope (slabs, framing, roofing, sub-contractor coordination).
• Verified by a currently licensed builder who acts as your referee.

3. The Application & Insurance

Apply for a Building Contractor Licence. To legally contract residential work over $20,000 in NSW, you must secure eligibility for the Home Building Compensation Fund (HBCF).
